Lim Ming Shern, a tattoo artist from Malaysia, has always been fascinated by the art of growing plants and recreating nature on a miniature scale. Known on Instagram as @blackcanvascapes, he embraces the concept of bringing nature indoors—especially into his workspace—by crafting compact terrariums that can be placed anywhere in his home to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
Many of his creations are inspired by forest landscapes, whether it's a sweeping forest scene or a detailed forest floor with tree roots, moss, and rocks. His attention to natural textures and layering brings a sense of depth and realism to each piece.
What brings him the most satisfaction is watching these miniature landscapes mature over time, slowly transforming into magical, mystical forests. He has been using ONF lights for nearly a year and has noticed a significant improvement in his plants’ growth—particularly in the vibrancy of their colors.
Terrariums had taught me patience and putting extra effort when getting things done.
I’m a full time tattoo artist. Details depth and contrast are my main focus when it comes to tattooing. Same applied in aquascaping. I would say since young my life has been revolving in arts! So art had applied in various ways for me!
My inspirations come from observing nature and I mostly collect my own materials. I also love reptiles and animals.
The outcome and a healthy terrarium is the motivation. My scapes are super low maintenance, only need to trim once a month but this is a hobby that never disappoints.
It is at the living room, where i usually sit and enjoy the scapes. I usually spend 30-40 mins per week on the scape. It's a space where everyone enjoys and relax.
